Temperate deciduous forests are found across much of north-west Europe, eastern North America and parts of east Asia. They are distributed at higher latitudes, where the sun's rays are weaker. They are found 40 to 60 degrees north and south of the equator.
Climate
They occur in these regions because they are well suited to the moderate climate. Rainfall is distributed evenly throughout the year, summers are warm but not too dry, winters are cool but not too cold. There are four seasons, and a long growing season lasting up to seven months. Soils that develop under these conditions tend to be rich and fertile. Weathering is active, providing plenty of nutrients, and the annual leaf fall provides organic matter to enrich the soil further. The common soil found in this biome is brown soil or brown earth soil.
