Tropical Rainforest: Stratification
General
Vegetation consists of many species: rosewood, mahogany, ebony, rubber and palm.
Trees have an evergreen appearance.
All trees and vegetation provide habitats for birds, animals and insects.
There's extremely lush and dense vegetation, you'd need a torch to enter.
There's a great variety of tree species, up to 100 in a hectare.
Layering
The tallest trees, (up to 50m), like capoc trees, are called
emergents
.
The top layer is called the
canopy
- this is a continuous layer which absorbs up to 70% of light.
They shade the underlying species and protect the soil from erosion.
The majority of plants and animals are found here.
The next layer is called the
u
ndercanopy
, and the trees grow up to 20m.
The lowest layer is the
shrub layer
- the vegetation has adapted to living in the shade of taller trees.
