Quiz - Restless Earth
Stratification
The top of the fully grown trees provides a
canopy
, which acts like an umbrella. The main trees forming this layer are
oak
and
ash
.
Beneath this is a
sub-canopy
of
saplings
and
smaller trees
such as
hazel
.
Below this is a
herb layer
of
brambles
,
bracken
,
bluebells
,
wild garlic
and
ivy
.
Finally there is a
ground layer
close to the soil surface. Here, it is damp and dark - ideal conditions for
moss
to grow.
Why Stratification is Useful
Can help prey hide from predators and vice versa.
Helps plant life, e.g. moss needs the darkness caused by the layers on top to grow.
